1940’s - 1960’s
Much changed in the area during this time period, with extensive development (The Tatum Sky Club early on) and then the use of the Fairfield Inn area as a training center for the Army Air Calvary in the time of the early Vietnam War.
During this time, the US Forest Service procured properties to protect the area and the natural resources. Around 1960, two gentlemen from SC started buying up most of the area from Toxaway to Sapphire in Transylvania County and some in Jackson County. The dam was rebuilt and then the many lakes and most of the subdivisions currently in the Toxaway and Sapphire areas were planned, built and sold for the next few decades.
Meanwhile at Overlook the Morrow family kept the property until 1973. While prices of properties were exponentially rising and demand increasing, the Morrows kept their property because they wanted something untainted by development and wanted to honor the family history.
