1930’s

In the early 1930’s, as the locals tell it, an employee was fired from the Sapphire Inn. He was so mad that he destroyed it by fire, and then went up what is now Upper Whitewater Rd (the State Road off of which Overlook has its drive) and burned several other buildings and cabins. According to the Morrow family, the Stickley home was burned to the ground.

As this was in the worst time of the Great Depression, the whole area was poor and unemployment was high. For years the area, including where Overlook is now, was left in dire straights and it was not until the 1940’s and 1950’s that things changed for both Overlook and the entire “Little Switzerland” area anchored by Sapphire Valley.
