Before the 1800’s
The Cherokee Indians (along with the Creek Indians, a newer nation) lived in the Sapphire area, as well as the entire area of what was ultimately called “Little Switzerland.” Little Switzerland stretched from the east at Lake Toxaway to the west in Highlands. Because of the clear air, waterfalls, spring-fed rivers, abundant natural resources, and the mountain topography (which both allowed them to see far distances yet also hide from being seen) this was a wonderful place for Native Indians to live and thrive.
